It seems easy, doesn’t it: Pitch your idea to an investor, receive some millions in cash and grow your company to an IPO in a few years. Well, securing venture capital is actually something that very few entrepreneurs successfully achieve. VCs are looking for much more than a nice idea and some early sales. In this workshop, we will try to share what makes a business a "VC-case" and why VC is not the right form of financing for most businesses.
Swisscom runs an intrapreneurship program called "Kickbox". Every employee can submit a startup idea and gets the physical Kickbox filled with useful tools and methods to validate the idea. The Kickboxer has two months to work his way through the box and through the validation process and needs to pitch the idea at the end of the RedBox phase in order to get funding for the second phase: the BlueBox phase. The BlueBox supports the Kickboxer to run a pilot with real customers. If the pilot was successful, the Kickboxer receives the GoldBox: The intrapreneur has created his own job within the company or became an entrepreneur of his own startup. This workshop gives you the chance to get to know Swisscom Kickbox. Moreover, you are able to pitch your very own startup idea, get a RedBox yourself and find other students that will support you in your own Kickbox journey.
AI is a general-purpose technology that will infuse all aspects of human life. In Switzerland and elsewhere. Therefore, it is of outmost importance to pro-actively address how the delivery and use of AI technologies should be governed. Manuel Macron got to the heart of the matter: “If you want to manage your own choice of society, your choice of civilization, you have to be able to be an acting part of this AI revolution.” What is needed to make Switzerland an acting part of the AI revolution instead of taking a “wait and see”-approach? How should the public discussion be framed to ensure all stakeholders can benefit from AI’s potential while controlling for its risks? Against this background, the workshop aims at articulating a specific call to action to bring Switzerland at the forefront of the AI revolution. We aim to bring together stakeholders from politics, the start-up scene and the private sector to come up with at least three specific demands that will later be shared with political decision makers in Berne.
Employment law might not be the first thing you are thinking of when trying to get your startup started, but the influence of labour law on the startup phase of a company should not be underestimated. For example, when the founders are hired, fundamental decisions are made that might have a far-reaching influence on the course of your own employment: What kind of notice do you provide for, how do you want to address non-compete issues, what about inventions that you made in the course of your employment? And how will your social security insurance coverage look like? The questions do not get easier when it comes to hiring your first own employees. Which things should one think of, and which can one confidently leave to the legal basic order? Within this workshop, we will try to answer these and many more questions, that typically arise in the startup phase of a company. The aim of the workshop is to develop sensitivity for labour law related issues, which should be actively addressed and not simply left to the course of time.
